Biased Voter Registration and Sarah Palin

Is This Legal?

So, on the UF campus, we've got volunteers who are helping students register to vote. These people are walking around campus with clipboards and the registration forms, asking people if they've registered. This makes it easy for students who would otherwise not have registered due to laziness or lack of time. Usually this would be a great service and I would commend them for it.

There's one small catch though. These people are wearing Obama stickers, buttons, shirts, hats, etc. Not only that, but I've heard some actively promoting Obama. Shouldn't these people be unbiased? I'm definitely a proponent of free speech (more so even than most of the Obama people that are volunteering), but is it legal to wear a certain candidate's promotional materials when registering people to vote. Furthermore, is it ethical?

While I'll never claim to be an expert in constitutional law, or any law for that matter, I do know a thing or two about ethics. I can tell you that, without a doubt, this is an unethical practice. Whether or not these people were trying to influence the potential voters, I will leave up to you to decide. Nonetheless, this type of promotion should not be going on.

Sarah Palin

That's a great transition into my feelings about Sarah Palin. The media (and SNL) are having a field day with Palin and her conservative views. Why do they seemingly pick a target like this and beat the dead horse until there's nothing left? To me, the answer is clear. The 90% (an arbitrary number) liberal media feel very threatened by Sarah Palin. They can see that she's a good leader, charismatic, and refuses to use the underhanded techniques that most Washington insiders, politicians and the media (more than anyone) use to try to sway voters and public opinion.

Granted, Palin has some weaknesses. She doesn't have a lot of experience (like Obama). She's not very strong on foreign policy (like Obama). She's a little polarized (like Obama). She has made some miscues speaking (like every politician, including Obama and Biden), in the debate she referenced Civil War General McClellan instead of current General McKiernan.

So why do I like her? Because she's a REAL person. She talks to the average American, not just the far right, the far left, or the "intellectual elite" that my far-left counterparts love so much. Granted, the "six-pack Joe" was not the best choice of words in the debate, but that's what we need. The American people have been frustrated with the White House and even more so with Congress because our government has stopped listening to us.

Sarah Palin does not pander to a small group of people that cause a stir to get their way. She's not so worried about offending someone that she can't be strong on any issues. She represents what America has been lacking for several years. She's a STRONG, no BS, no pandering type of person who is a born leader, and a good person with morals and values. Say all you want about her lack of experience, her mistakes, etc. She is a true leader, she's not an elitist, and she's in touch with the American people. That's the most important "issue" in this presidential race.

I go to The Ohio State University, and I get accosted by people trying to register me to vote [*cough*for Obama*cough*] all the time. These people always are sporting Obama gear in plain sight. I think it's legal, but you've nailed it on the head that trying to influence the vote under the pretense of promoting a fair, all-inclusive election is unethical.

I appreciate both of your comments, and for not being influenced by these unethical practices. Obama is a Marxist and will do anything to get elected. Please keep up the fight on your campuses as you both live in crucial battle ground states!
